Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 18 second graders in a low income community. The majority of my students are defined as being "economically disadvantaged." Therefore, free breakfast and free lunch is available to every student in our school on a daily basis remotely.
Being a Teacher in a low income community has revealed to me the urgency of attaining a variety of reading resources for my students.
Many of my students come from homes with limited reading materials. I try to instill a passion for reading whether it is based on their interest inventories or when teaching to the common core. My students love to read both nonfiction and fiction books. They love reading so much that they are commended for being AR recognized on a monthly basis for reading the most words in the grade level. Currently, many of the them are reading at a third and fourth grade level.
Their love of reading has inspired me to create this project in order to incorporate reading remotely as they continue their learning til the end of the school year. I can't wait to see how excited they will be once this project gets funded.
My Project
Distance learning has been a challenge in order to keep my students connected especially because they "Love" to read. Unfortunately, many of my students don't have books at home. Currently, they are relying on online reading materials. I have always tried to incorporate literacy into the common core in the classroom as much as possible.
I would Love to implement both "read-alouds" and "book clubs," in our Zoom meetings.
This would help foster their love of literature. Also, they would be able to continue doing their book studies on their chapter books. When we meet, we can hold discussions about their books. I know that my students would love having these new resources to help entice them to learn remotely. I miss my kiddos. Even though we're far apart they are close in my heart!
