My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their challenges, they come to school ready to learn. They work hard to learn everything they need to be successful in their post-secondary goals.
Some of my students have not been provided with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic excellence and prepare them for post-secondary employment.
My Project
I teach Life and Transition Skills to students with disabilities in a rural high school. As part of a work study/life skills/transition class, they help order, stock, inventory and distribute food from our school food pantry. By helping in the food pantry, students are able to gain skills that will help them transition to adult life.
Right now we are only able to store dry storage items.
By adding the option of frozen food, they will be able to learn proper storage, organization, and the appropriate shelf life of frozen foods. This will also provide more variety to our food pantry participants by making frozen meat, dinners and vegetables available to them.
