My students need an air conditioner to keep them cool and comfortable so they can focus on learning after climbing the five flights of stairs to our classroom.

As a kindergarten to 2nd grade student everything is brand new! Reading, writing, making friendships, and exploring basic math opens up the mind. Art, science, and movement inspire imagination and a world of possibility. But if it is uncomfortably hot and stuffy, a child can't focus on learning.
The students in my class attend a public school for children with special needs in NYC.
We are located on the top floor of a community school and must climb 5 flights of stairs many times during the day to get to our classroom, go to lunch, and get the bus. The boys and girls are from 5-7 years old and have been diagnosed as Mentally Retarded with significant language impairments. Many have Down Syndrome. They are children full of curiosity and excitement to learn, with strong personalities and ideas of their own. They communicate through their actions, a picture exchange system, and as many words as they can express clearly. We have a small class size of 12 children with 5 adults in the room. Most of the children struggle to attend to a task and may experience frustration at learning a new skill. They each receive special services like speech, occupational, and physical therapy to increase levels of independence and strength. Some of them have heart conditions and/or asthma.
For safety reasons the classroom windows only open about six inches. The air circulation is poor despite a fan that is on one side of the room. Many of the paraprofessionals have hand held paper and cloth fans that they will fan the children with during circle or other activities, however the heat and humidity make it very difficult for the children to give their energy to lessons. The school's maintenance staff say it is possible to install an air conditioner, but there are no funds to purchase one.
An air conditioner would greatly improve learning conditions for the children in this classroom 5 months out of the year.
The overall health and well-being of the students would benefit their motivation to participate in songs, movement, and other learning activities that will inspire their education.
