My students need snacks and personal care items such as Kleenex, hand lotion and cream, granola bars, and paper towels so they can stay healthy and focused.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in a rough neighborhood, but my students travel from all over the South Side and beyond to attend. My students are 71% African-American and 25% Hispanic, and an overwhelming majority are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. They are incredibly focused on their education, so focused that they often forget the basics.
My students need snacks and personal care items available to them at school so they can stay focused on their studies.
If your basic needs aren't met, it's impossible to concentrate, apply yourself, and learn. Whether they simply forgot these items at home, or were not able to purchase them in the first place, my students need to have access to a variety of snacks, kleenex, and hand lotion.
My Project
Keeping teenagers healthy at school can be a challenge. I hear students declare they have not eaten nearly every day. An empty stomach is a huge distraction, so I need to have snacks and paper towels available to offer so my students can regain their focus. Kleenex is another necessity especially during the winter months. Sick students don't remember to bring a box of kleenex to school because they're sick. Having extra boxes handy can make the positive difference in their day.
My goal is to make my classroom a healthy, comfortable place.
All of these requested items are all so simple, yet so important.
