Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a bilingual special education teacher who serves an elementary school. It is one of the poorest in the nation. Our students are mostly immigrants from South and Central America, who are in need of more than pencil and paper to understand the world around them. They share the drive to learn about the world through videos, pictures and even YouTube videos. The need for supplies is great since our resources are often very limited. Education is often the only escape. It gives them the hope that one day they will be able to experience the world. Our students are in a self-contained Cognitive Impairment classroom.
My Project
I am requesting basic cleaning supplies, such as detergent, air freshener, disinfecting wipes and dryer sheets for my special education students. Most of my students live in poverty. Their parents don't have the finances to make sure that their clothes, sheets and blankets are washed every week. Unfortunately, many students come to school with spots and stains and they wear the same clothes for several days. This will make them feel better about themselves.
I am requesting these supplies because I want to eliminate any barrier to my students learning!
These supplies will not only keep my students clean, but healthy as well! When students are ill, they spread germs in school. These appliances will help to deter the spread of childhood germs and diseases. It will teach them that besides taking care of one’s own personal hygiene, it is also just as important to make sure our clothes smell clean and their personal space is tidy too. This will transfer over to success outside of the classroom.
