The students in my class are in 3rd through 5th grade and receive special education services throughout their day. My students need a variety of sensory materials to help them regulate their bodies and maintain focus. I teach in special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students have many different emotional and behavioral needs, they like to explore and learn in many different ways. Each student is unique and special in their own way. I teach at an elementary school in Wheeling, WV where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students are in grades third through fifth grade and spend multiple years with me, so I really get to know what they need to perform their best.
My students love to learn, but many times are fighting the urge to get up and move around while they are supposed to be in one specific area. My students need lots of supports to keep them calm and focused during whole group lessons and help before the situation becomes stressful for them. The sensory socks will provide a safe hug feeling when they are overwhelmed and need to calm themselves. With the help of these 'bouncing chairs' my students will be able to not only get their work done, but release their energy at the same time! Your donation would make it possible for my students to maintain their focus on their work rather than wanting to move around. Florescent light covers will create a more calming classroom for them to enter. Lap pads can provide them with a calming activity to do with their hands so their ears and brains can continue to engage on the teacher. These items will give my students the ability to concentrate on their academics that they so desperately need! My students need these tools to help them stay calm and focused when in the general education classes with their typically developing peers by reducing distractions and keeping their hands busy.
