Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is filled with learning and imagination. We work on reading, writing, math, handwriting, social studies, etc. every day. We teach our students what they need to learn and more importantly to love learning. As a special education teacher, in an Inclusive Co-Teaching setting (in which both general education students and special education students learn side by side) in East Harlem. It is my job to provide opportunities for all students to learn in different ways to meet their diverse learning needs. It is important that my instruction includes audio, visual, and kinaesthetic aspects enabling all students to access information.
Inclusion is not simply about proximity, it is about intentionally planning for the success for all students.
In addition to having an integrated community of learners, we also consider the socioeconomic status, social emotional needs and cultures in our classroom community when creating our classroom environment and implementing lessons. Our students are mainly Hispanic and African-American, inner-city children that range in level of education as well as ranging in language exposure. Some of our students come from newly immigrated parents who speak very little English.
My Project
Please help support the diverse learning needs of my students with these sensory materials! Different students need different things to be successful!
Addressing my students' sensory and emotional needs is imperative to help them progress academically and socially!
Weighted blanket pads are an excellent way to help students who have trouble calming their bodies and their minds. In my ICT we have many students with different special education classifications, most of which incorporate behavioral and social emotional needs. There are students who get overstimulated and have difficulty staying focused and calm, which impacts their learning. There are also students who get easily triggered to revert to more physical behaviors. The pressure of the weighted blanket helps to provide pressure, calming their senses and helping them to stay calm and focused on the lesson at hand. The liquid bubbler and timer are tools that are essential for our class peace corner! We try to empower students to self-regulate their emotions by asking to go to the peace corner for a 3 minute break when needed. Students use the peace corner as a preventative measure or coping strategy when: they are bothered by something in school, frustrated with work, having issues with a friend, dealing with something at home, need a break for a bit, etc. It helps give them the time they need to reset and refocus before rejoining the group. The liquid bubbler is very calming and the timer helps keep the structure and expectations to use the peace corner appropriately. These materials are invaluable to my students as they grow to become independent members of the classroom community.
