Keeping Autism Students Focused

My students need classroom dividers so they may have a work area that will allow them to work without distraction.

My Students

"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." ~e.e. cummings

The students in my classroom face challenges on a daily basis.

Yet, they are the most courageous, witty, and resourceful students that I know. They embrace the opportunity for learning and becoming who they really are. I have nine wonderful students, grades 6-8, with Autism and/or cognitive delays in my classroom. Although each student is at a different level of learning, they all wish to be academically successful. My goal as their teacher is to help them realize their full potential and to give them life long learning skills. Our school is a public elementary school in a high poverty area in Illinois. Our school does not have the extra funds available to enhance the classroom materials. Likewise, the parents do not have the extra funds to donate materials to the classroom. I am counting on the generous support of donors like you to help me make my classroom a fantastic learning adventure for my students!

My Project

By having the dividers in my classroom, I will be able to organize the work stations for my students with Autism in such a way that they will be able to focus on their work without distractions from the rest of the classroom. Children with Autism have a more difficult time focusing on the task at hand than other children do. The dividers will keep them focused and productive.

The donation you choose to make helps me become one step closer to setting up my classroom in such a way that truly works for a child with Autism.

Because my school is in a high poverty area, I am using make shift materials now to try to build a temporary work area that will be productive for these students. The dividers will not only allow me to arrange all of my students so they each have their own work area but will also give some continuity to the look of our classroom.
