Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There's something happening in urban education. I teach 11th grade American Literature and AP Literature at a small public charter school. Our students come from low-income communities and the school, because it is charter school, receives significantly less funding from the state than a traditional public school.
The AP program at the school is only in its second year. As we strive to close the achievement gap that keeps students from low-income communities from getting into college, AP test scores carry tremendous weight. Due to severe cuts in budget from major donors to the charter, I do not have many of the resources to expose my students (many of whom did not know what an AP class was before this year) to the rigor of the exam. Unlike many of their peers in affluent communities and schools, my students and their families cannot afford to invest in test preparation materials.
I need test preparation materials for my students. Sparknotes has a study pack designed for AP Literature that will make the content of the course accessible to them. The study pack will also help them throughout the year, as they navigate the various genres and literary periods covered in the course. Because budget cuts also effect our ability to copy materials for our students, a copy of the pack for each student will maximize their exposure to the AP Literature Exam.
One in ten students from low-income communities attend and graduate from college. Your help will bring my AP Literature students one step closer to defying that statistic. By enrolling in this course, these students already show the desire to attend and compete in college. Help them achieve that dream.
