My students need helmets with face masks to protect them during games and practices. Currently, we do not have a set of team helmets that fits all the girls on our team.
In our small urban town, parents and community are very supportive of our students. Our school offers several AP and Honors courses as well as remediation classes. Our athletic program has seen lots of success over the years ranging from swimming to surf to baseball and softball. Our track and soccer programs have also been incredibly successful over the past few years to add to the success of sports in our school. Due to our small school environment, many students play a different sport each season.
For many of our student-athletes, it is a dream to play in college.
For this reason, we work incredibly hard at the high school level to keep up with the competition and prepare our athletes for the next level both in and out of the classroom.
Our sporting events are well attended and supported by the community. Even those who do not have a student or family member in the event are there cheering on the local hometown heroes. Our goal is to continue this pride and to help our students to reach their full athletic and academic potential.
My Project
Currently, our girls do not have matching team helmets. Without this project, our girls must purchase their own helmets, which can become very pricey each year. Because of recent rule changes to the game, the helmets require face masks which also makes them more expensive than in previous years. Because we have new team members joining each year, we would like to make sure we have a consistent team piece for each player.
Helmets are an incredibly important safety feature of softball and we want to make sure our team is equipped with this gear.
Our current helmets are too large for most girls, thus making it difficult to wear on the bases. Throughout the course of practice and the game, I often see players holding up their mask or hanging onto their head so that it doesn't fall down to block their vision. Some have even opted out of wearing the team helmet because it is too large. Our goal is to provide this gear to the team so they are more comfortable while remaining safe on the field.
