Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school serves about 350 students in East Oakland. Many of the students are English Language Learners from different ethnic communities in the surrounding areas, with the majority of them being Latino, Arabic, and African American. Although these students love to come to school and have the passion to learn, they often lack the support or resources they need to become successful students. Many struggle due to poverty, broken homes, lack of school supplies or materials, and no access to community resources among other things.
The beautiful thing about this is even with the odds against them, my students continue to persevere and not let anything get in their way of learning.
With a little help and encouragement, many of these students are able to discover their true potential and become passionate learners.
My Project
My classroom economy runs on a point system using Class Dojo, an online classroom management app that also connects with parents and gives students opportunities to self-manage their behaviors. It is a great system and students love getting points for positive behaviors and learning successes. However, to keep students motivated to learn and to continue to show positive behaviors, we need fun prizes and incentives to supply our Dojo treasure box.
Although my students are fifth graders and may seem like they are too old to care for stickers and pencils, underneath they are still just children and all children loves being celebrated and recognized with rewards!
My project includes a variety of prizes, big and small, and I try to keep it relevant to what is "in" right now, such as fidget spinners, slime, scented markers, and fans. This will help supply our dojo box for the year. Thank you for your support!
