This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are energetic, excited seven and eight year olds with a passion for STEM. Our school was transformed into a STEM magnet school four years ago to increase elementary exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic concepts. Most of my students have attended our school since kindergarten and have had the opportunity to explore STEM related ideas from the conception of their formal schooling! Because of this, their passion for discovery and hands on learning is evident.
My school is an incredibly diverse Title 1 school, serving students from a variety of racial and cultural backgrounds.
Our entire student population receives free lunch. It is my belief that every child deserves equity when accessing high quality materials, be that literature, math manipulatives, or technology/engineering-based projects.
My Project
This project will allow my students to access weekly current events through Time for Kids and Scholastic News. Students will read the articles in small group rotations weekly in order to maximize the time in the classroom. This, paired with fluency activities and culturally relevant historical texts, will help to expand their understanding of the world around them.
Funding this project will put high quality literature into the hands of my students, and the knowledge will also continue with them far beyond the walls of my classroom.
Learning about famous African Americans' influence on the history of the United States paired with current events will help my students to realize they can effect change in their communities and our world.
