This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over ninety-five percent of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Students speak a multitude of languages including English Hmong, Urdu, Bengali, Thai, Mai Mai, Somali, French, Arabic and many more.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
Most of my students are performing below grade level and some are significantly below grade level. Many students lack strong parental support in their academics and many do not see education as an important part of their lives.
Being an inner-city school, my students do not always get the same opportunities and resources that other schools have; I would like to even the playing field, just a little bit if I can. Budgets are tight and inner-city schools are literally on the chopping block for budgets; with that said, our school doesn't allow for any classroom budgets and I personally cannot afford to continually pay for items out of my pocket.
My Project
I have ordered paper and toner, as well as some all inclusive resources in the area of math and reading. I want to be able to copy work for my students on my copy machine at home and then deliver it to their homes.
More than half of my 8th graders do not have regular access to the internet.
While we hear about schools doing online classes, that's not even an option for my district. The district is passing out food to our students and some work. I would like to reach out to my students and their families and provide some specific work that the students can do, so that they don't fall behind before they enter high school.
I'm hoping to get this project funded really fast, so that I may be able to complete it prior to next year. If we are able to return to school before the end of the academic year, I will still use the resources that you helped fund, to catch the students up from this long absence from the classroom and even give them work to use during the summer break.
