This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
N.A. is an alternative high school program that specializes in helping students work towards earning a diploma. Our student population is below 150, and we have a staff of 27. Our students are typically over age and under-credited. Many are working to overcome educational obstacles, such as homelessness, teenage pregnancy, and community violence, in order to complete high school.
Students who are able to earn their high school diplomas at NA are typically the first in their families.
This is a tremendous accomplishment for our students and their communities, because many remain in those areas and pursue skilled careers. Despite the obstacles, our student population is quite resilient.
Following the great flood of 2016, many families in the city of Baton Rouge and surrounding areas lost their homes and most of their possessions. However, our students continued to come to school knowing that getting a high school diploma is the key to a better future.
My Project
As a school, our goal is to remove as many obstacles to learning as we can to help our students achieve. Each year, we discover that there are students whose families are unable to purchase proper outer gear for school during cold months. This presents a problem when they have to walk to a bus stop and even more so since we have an open, outdoor campus.
We want to remove simple obstacles like not having winter outer gear in order to help students focus more heavily on academic achievement.
We plan to provide sweatshirts to any student who is in need, and will continue to look for additional sources of support to meet the goal of eliminating this obstacle for all of our students.
