The children in my classroom will certainly keep you on your toes! Being on the autism spectrum, their high energy flows within all aspects of our day, from the playground to instruction. Because they are on the autism spectrum, some transitions become difficult, resulting in meltdowns and difficult behaviors. Some of my kiddos are also speech delayed, making it difficult for them to express their wants, needs and emotions.
"Use your words" is a phrase that myself and the other adults in the room use countless times every day.
For some of my students, all they can give is a short phrase like "more please," for a few others it is sign language, and for others, it is a complete sentence. The sweet kiddos in my class cover the spectrum from one end to the other. They are all special and each bring a different aspect to the classroom; they all have their own strengths and also areas they need help in, such as communication and social skills. We celebrate triumphs every day as they learn, grow and communicate in a more effective way.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad mini and case for my class of special needs children. We currently have one, which has apps to improve their social skills, learn emotions, comprehension practice, and curriculum related skills. The children in my class have autism spectrum disorder and these basic skills are difficult for them. Some of my students struggle daily with basic verbal communication, and these apps are helping them use their words to tell me their wants and needs. We desperately need a second iPad because one just isn’t enough for 8 children. My goal is to use this technology to assist my students in becoming more functional, verbal and self sufficient.
