My students have smiles that will light the room. They come to class excited to create and experiment. While some have access to art materials at home, most do not so my classroom is their studio. They bring their ideas, beliefs, and stories to share through their artwork and I love getting to share it with them. Every day there are moments of inspiration and excitement.
I appreciate and enjoy their excitement and energy even more knowing that for many, daily life outside of school can be a struggle.
My school has a high percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch, and we have a least a few students who are currently homeless. That being said, you would never know that in our art studio.
My Project
I have the opportunity to teach small groups of 4th and 5th grade students how to crochet. As they learn this life long craft they create hats and scarves to donate to those in need. We have worked with the Little Hats, Big Hearts project with the American Heart Association the last two years and this year we also started donating blankets and hats to a local shelter for families with young children experiencing homelessness.
Learning a skill and then being able to help others using that skill is an experience everyone should have.
The yarn and hooks will give my students to tools and materials so they can give back to and improve our community.
I learned to crochet from my grandmother as a child and it is a skill that has allowed me to practice creativity, perseverance, charity, and working toward excellence. I want my students to practice all of these skills. They are the skills they will use to build their own success not just with crochet but also as they grow into adults.
