I teach first grade in a community where the majority of my students go home to non-English speaking homes. We are a high needs school and most of my students receive free and reduced lunch.

Although my students are only in first grade, I stress to them the importance of organization on a daily basis. It is a word we use when we talk about our writing journals, our desks, and our supplies. I know when they go home they may not hear the importance of this vital skill. The problem lies in the area of our room that houses our materials that go home at the end of every day. We have a stapled pocket chart with numbers written on different sections. Students are constantly taking home others' homework and important information. Truly, a little less than organized.

I am asking for a communication center to better organize our homework and important notes home. Not only will my students stop inadvertently taking their peers homework home with them, it will also serve as a communication area for parents and guardians. Important dates and news can be listed for anyone walking into our room to see! Organization perfection!

If learned early, organization remains a lifelong skill. I was blessed to have grown up in an organized household and some of my students may not have the same situation. I want to show them the benefits of having not only an organized classroom but an organized life!
