Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are passionate, super creative humans who are ready to shake things up wherever they go! Something I love about my school is that we have critical thinkers as our students, children who challenge the status quo and always ask "why?" when something doesn't sit right with them.

Something I love even more is that my students love to have fun; we've got Tik Tok dancers, beat makers, poets, and more!

As a dance teacher, I love to channel all that amazing creativity in my classroom. Unfortunately, the arts are consistently underfunded and under-supported in public schools. I don't even have a classroom! So I'm here today to gather some resources to uplift and empower the creativity within my students!

My Project

My students have come off of two years of learning from home and not participating in any sports or extracurriculars because of the pandemic. Because of this lack of exercise and everyday activity, their physical health and stamina have unfortunately declined. They love a good tik tok dance though! And we have excitedly been able to offer the school's first ever dance class to students in 6th grade and 9th-12th grade!

This class has come with some COVID related challenges though.

It's super difficult for the students to be active through their masks, they have low focus and motivation, and the school does not have a classroom to hold dance so we teach in the auditorium or whatever classrooms are open at the time.

We need to re-fuel on masks, water, Gatorade, snacks, and incentives for participation like candy and games. Having these things helps tremendously with engagement. We have four more months of school and need enough supplies to get us through this final stretch of the school year.
