My class is a third grade class in Southern California. Our school has a Special Education preschool as well as an Explorer class for students K-3rd grade.

My students have been exposed to the past but are not aware of what is going on in the world right now. They get their information mostly from what their parents tell them, but as their teacher, I want to make sure that they understand how that information can impact them now and in the future. When we spent election day going over Barack Obama and John McCain, and their qualities that made them good candidates, each student was actively engaged throughout the day. We had the opportunity to visit a precinct that was located at our school and the students were able to see where to vote, how they could vote when they were old enough, and voters in action! After we visited the precinct, we went back to class to vote for ourselves. Each group was assigned a different precinct to vote at. The students received stickers that read, "I voted" and after lunch we tallied up the votes to see who won.

My class' enthusiasm that day sparked an interest in them that I had not seen until that point. Our class would really benefit to know about the current events that are usually filtered down to them by their parents. They would enjoy receiving TIME For Kids Magazine because they could have class discussions, be well informed, and become active global citizens. My students would be able to have conversations with their parents about the events that are happening locally, nationally, and globally.
