This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students have found motivation to read for pleasure in the many popular book series aimed at young adults. They are often disappointed when we do not have the next book. Budget cuts have hindered our ability to keep the collection current and we need to continue to pique their reading interests.
The students at our magnet school are talented in the visual and performing arts, but often have poor academic skills compared to their peers in the suburbs.
Many come from homes without books and their local libraries are commonly closed due to budget cuts, too far away, or in unsafe neighborhoods.
My Project
Studies show that recreational reading improves literacy development, vocabulary, writing skills, and test scores. Free voluntary reading is also connected with college preparedness and success. Students are enthusiastically borrowing books that are a part of a series and establishing a life-long love of reading.
Access to books and motivation to read are sorely lacking in the young people of our district.
We have seen their expressed desire for these books, but budget limitations have not allowed us to build a collection that will bring them back for more. Reading will not only open them up to success in school, college, and career but also open up that special door to the imagination that books hold the key.
