Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of the students in our school are disengaged students from low-income, urban families. Many of them have had some sort of trauma or stress in their lives which impact their ability to learn or stay motivated through the challenges of school and life in order to prepare for college and a successful future. The students in our class are special education students with varying abilities and needs.
We serve at risk special education students in an urban high school from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
They bring joy to our day the minute they enter our classroom. They are excepting of others, willing to work hard and appreciative of what little they have. They are the reason we teach and continue to grow.
My Project
Students in our Learning Strategies class are special educations students with varying abilities and needs. These students struggle to focus, complete assignments, come to class and remain motivated. We see that 40% of our students have between 5 and 20 absences, so giving them access to materials they want and need in school would increase their student attendance and engagement. When discussing this issue with them, students started to share what they needed to have access to, that would keep them motivated and engaged. They made a list of materials and snacks as a group and shared that these are the things that will help them get to to class, take away their hunger and give them the tools they need to stay engaged.
We want our students to come to class.
Our students don’t have the money or are nervous to ask for headphones from home, making classwork very challenging or impossible. They stress about not having money to bring snacks to school and they worry that the vending machines will be empty. Having snacks in class can alleviate that stress, allowing them to focus on their goals. Our students struggle to focus and need something to fidget with or a flexible seating option to keep them from acting out or becoming disengaged. Having fidgets on hand would provide quick access to something to calm them and allow them to engage in their tasks much quicker. Our students ask what is going on in our school community. Having a calendar visible in class would be a great reminder of how they can become engaged in a bigger way in our school. We have seen a remarkable difference in students who have access to the materials, food and fidgets they need and we want that success for our students.
