Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have a amazing problem at our school. We have students who are so eager to read that we are running out of books! My 8th grade book club reads all the latest and greatest books, and I have trouble as the librarian financially keeping up with them. Please help us buy a new and exciting series!
I work at an urban school district in Texas.
Over 95% of the students in our school are economically disadvantaged, 40% are Limited English Proficient, 25% are Mobile or move often, 17% qualify for Special Education and 64% are considered At-risk. Our population has many disadvantages to overcome, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to encourage reading.
It seems like middle school is generally place for reluctant readers because reading for pleasure is not cool for most students. However, I have seen a change in our school. In the three years I have worked here I am proud to say that students have been reading more, checking out more books, and our grade level book clubs have great participation. I am truly excited about the culture of reading that is growing at my school, and I want it to continue to develop.
My Project
My avid book club readers have already devoured one series that was twelve books long! We are well on our way to finishing the second series we started and we are looking for another fun read! I have chosen The Girl of Fire and Thorns and it's sequel Crown of Embers because it is right up our alley! These books have magic, mystery, romance, intrigue, and most of all a strong female heroine. My girls need new, exciting books to read to feed their passion for reading. I have read these novels and I know there is depth to the story, strong characters and plot. These books are perfect for the thorough and lively discussions we have in our book club.
My students, for the most part, cannot afford to buy their own books.
I encourage them to borrow and read as many books as possible, but I have a limited library budget each year. My students read so fast that I cannot order all the latest books. The great Stephen Krashen says that the effects of poverty can be overcome by having access to a well stocked library. My school will greatly appreciate these novel sets that will pass through many young readers hands.
