After 17 years of teaching I have finally had an "aha" moment. I implemented a reading table with book characters and books that revolve around a theme. This table has been a huge hit. Why didn't I think about putting story props out before?
I teach 27 enthusiastic students in a small school in rural Northern California.
Our class is large, but I have very eager students who love to learn. With such motivated students, it is so much fun to add exciting programs to supplement our curriculum. They appreciate having new and innovative methods to help them learn.
My Project
My students need 6 story prop kits. I am asking for 6 popular titles for the kits from If Give a Mouse a Cookie to Ocean. This year I have started putting story props and books on a table. The kids have gone wild for them. They love to come in each Monday to see the new display. The props requested in this project are to supplement six popular books that I share with my class every year. The kits will encourage kids to read. The kits will improve their reading skills. The kits will keep the reading buzz in the room. The kits also all have animals as characters which is a unit of study in 1st grade.
By helping fund this project, you'll be getting quality literacy materials into the hands of my students.
The props and books I have shared this year have gone over so well that it prompted me to seek out more kits. Adding these six new kits will be adding six new weeks of exciting reading.
