Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an amazing school inner-city school in Northern California. My students, though almost 90% of them receive free lunch, are outstanding and motivated. Our school recently won awards for our improvement of student learning. The kids work hard and I'm confident that we're having success building a college-going culture.
But it's not enough. Most of my students are still not achieving at the appropriate grade level. I believe that more time spent each day with direct instruction will help to ensure even more success! We need to catch them up to their grade level so that we can begin to accelerate them even further.
To address this problem, I am running an after school program to help students use the few hours after school before their parents get off of work in a highly productive way. This is not just a babysitting service - we are providing high quality instruction in math, reading, and science as well as great help with homework and time for silent reading.
We have no materials for our program, though. At the moment, we are doing our best by buying a few things out of pocket. One thing that we could benefit from EVERY DAY would be a set of mini white boards. Instead of students having to pull out paper after paper, they would be able to use these individual boards to practice math, erase, and then practice more math! We could use this in English and science as well - the possibilities are nearly endless.
This proposal would fund mini white boards for a few classrooms of students as well as dry erase markers and erasers - all the materials that we will need to make this happen!
