The mission of our school is to build a strong bridge between home and school early learning experiences and to create a safe, welcoming, developmentally appropriate environment where learning is joyful and accessible for all students. Our vision is to develop capable individuals, curious learners, and contributing citizens.
Our school is a culturally and academically diverse school that serves students with a strong instructional program, a wide range of activities, an extensive student recognition program and an ongoing partnership with parents and the community.
The school is in the second year of being open. This year we will qualify as a Title I School with more than half of our population receiving free or reduced lunches. My classroom as a whole consists of a variety of students with a variety of backgrounds. This year I have students experiencing financial hardships, loss of family, various health needs, and more. For many students, due to their parents working all day, they don't have a chance to see them but for a brief time in the evening. Despite whatever is going on in my student's lives, they love school, they work hard, and they know I care about them! They are amazing!!
Due to the generosity of donors, a few month ago, I was lucky enough to have a project funded for a color LaserJet printer. This printer was needed and is still needed to help support my kindergarten students learning and make it more meaningful for them. The color printer has allowed me to reach not only my classroom of kindergarten students but two other kindergarten classrooms of students as well. We, myself and the other two teachers who use it, have been able to print many games for reading and math rotations which have directly impacted learners in reaching them at their own level. They have been so excited to play the colorful games and it has made learning more meaningful for them. Currently, the sample color toner that came with the printer has run out and we are no longer able to print learning materials in color.
Color toner is essential to bringing learning to life for students and making it meaningful.
Research shows that students relate to concepts and ideas they are learning about when they can see them in their true colors. In addition, students who are learning English as a second language can relate to what is being taught in the classroom more clearly when they can see it in color. In December, myself along with the two other teachers that use the color printer will be teaching about winter holidays celebrated around the world as well as comparing and contrasting gingerbread stories. In order for students to understand these concepts and relate to what we are teaching, we need to be able to print pictures in color. We are aware that the cost of toner is a lot, however, the impact it makes in the life of a kindergarten student is endless!
