My students are special needs students who have multiple disabilities. They walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They are a group of children who work hard at being an inspiration to themselves and to others.
They enjoy incorporating what they have learned from real life experiences and they are very enthusiastic about learning!
There are many outside factors that they cannot control that can affect their day. They each have their own learning needs, which makes it very important for me to provide my students with differentiated instruction and a safe environment, as well as an education that is based around whole brain learning.
We are a part of an elementary school in Columbus, Ohio which is of the highest poverty. Our students do not have the resources at home to succeed in this world, so it is my job to help them learn these skills at school!
My Project
Many homeless and foster children fall behind in school. This creates frustration in the children, the feeling of inadequacy, truancy, anger, and a downhill slope in self-esteem and school grades. It is my goal to lift these children up by providing them with basic hygiene and health items that they don't have. I am requesting deodorant and wet wipes to keep in the classroom so these students can clean up and start school feeling their best! I would also like to provide them with water bottles, encouraging them to drink more water and to provide them with clean water, which that may not have access to. I have requested storage containers for them to keep their personal items in at school, and to keep other students safe from bugs or things that may be on their personal items while experiencing homelessness.
Students attending school fully equipped experience a huge boost in morale overall.
Homeless and foster children are then less self-conscious and can focus their energy on learning.
It is my goal to make a healthy, safe and comfortable environment for these students without homes.
