Ms. Gray from Chicago IL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to continue to see poetry throughout the summer. Their drive on the poetry portfolios has caused me to step my instruction up in regards to poetry rigor.

Although my students come to me for 6th Grade Math instruction, they are slotted two hours with me. The extra hour of time allows me to supplement a extra half hour in math intervention and poetry to teach a sense of community, allows for speaking and listening opportunities and resilience.
Currently 37 strong diverse behaviors sit before me each day and we make up a community of learners from the Westside of Chicago.
Our school is sometimes a revolving door of personalities through my experience as a middle school teacher. We seem to always be one teacher short in 6th grade with instruction being in a crowded classroom with one teacher teaching all core subjects. Not the way middle school should start out or even be an experience for students going through puberty, with emotions and a multitude of personalities. My students come from a vary unique book that has yet to be written, the backgrounds they come from aid in the drive they have to defy what society has to say about them prior to even speaking to them as they pass by them on any street in our wonderful melting pot of a city.
The materials I am requesting will allow me( and you) to send them of to the summer with poetry in hand to engage their minds as I have already started the legwork within our classroom. Excerpts from all of the books especially "Joyful Noise Poetry for Two Voices' and "How to Eat a Poem A Smorgasbord of Tasty And Delicious Poems for Young Readers" will be used in the classroom for the remaining portion of the year and then given to the students to analyze and relate to throughout the summer.
Our project of books will allow me to send a message of yes poetry is important.
Majority of my students love music , i teach them that music is poetry, you need to have a rich vocabulary to sing and rap. Having books of poetry when they leave for the summer allows me to know they have some wood to keep the fire of loving poetry burning.
