Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from inland and are so excited to be at the ocean studying the creatures that live there. Sometimes it is the first time they have seen the ocean. They are eager for hands-on learning! They have clever minds and pick up quickly on new concepts. They are very energetic and ready to learn.
Their week at outdoor science school, learning about the Ocean and Earth's resources is something they will never forget.
For many, it will be a life changing experience, opening their eyes to the natural world around them and it's beauty.
My Project
These lanterns will both teach students about solar re-chargeable lights, and give them comfort by giving them light in their cabins. They will need to put these lights out in the sun in the daytime to re-charge the batteries. Then they will enjoy the benefit of having ceiling lights in their cabins.
They will learn that a tiny solar panel can make enough electricity to re-charge a battery which then powers a very energy efficient LED light.
This will help them get around and find their stuff after it gets dark before bedtime. Some students cannot afford to bring their own flashlight to outdoor school, and these will provide lighting for everyone, and make them feel more comfortable, especially those afraid of the dark.
