My Students

As a librarian one of my most important jobs is getting good books into kids' hands. Books are so important for so many reasons. From improving academic performance and developing empathy and other social and emotional skills to providing an often much needed escape from reality books are essential. I read once that "reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are" and that has never been more true than today. This pandemic has caused us all to slow down. For many, this has been a needed reprieve from the hustle and bustle. Many now have time to relax, read, or engage in some other type of self-care. However, this is a very stressful time for many others.

This time is especially difficult for students like mine whose families were already struggling.

Most of my students are now at home with no access to reading materials. They have so much time for reading but no books. Unfortunately, many of them were already struggling academically and this will only widen the gap. But things are not hopeless! With your help, I would like to get high interest books in my students' hands.

My Project

Many of the students I serve come from homes experiencing financial hardship. These students are our most vulnerable and are those who are most negatively impacted by not having access to reading materials from school or public libraries. We have been away from school from several weeks now, and we will not be able to return this year. Our public libraries are closed as well.

Many of my students no longer have access to books.

Many of these students are already struggling academically and unlike their more affluent peers most do not have home libraries or the ability to place an order online. It is imperative that we find ways to get books into their hands. With your help, I will be able to distribute these high interest books to our students to enrich their time while they are cut off from so many of their resources.
