Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine you're a kid who's crazy about a book series; your school library has the first few titles, but not the final books in the series. You are constantly asking the school librarian when those books will be arriving - but he doesn't have an answer for you. That, in a nutshell, is our problem.

Let me tell you something about those kids.

There are about 800 of them. They study at a K-8 Center in South Florida. For 'K-8' Center, read 'elementary + middle school combined'. Most are on free or reduced lunch, i.e. they are poor. The majority are first-generation Americans. (Their parents perform menial jobs in the tourist industry). The Principal has had no money for library books for the last two years, and won't have any for the foreseeable future. The financial outlook for schools in our district looks particularly gloomy: most school money comes from property taxes, but the local housing market has collapsed - one house in four is in foreclosure. YOU understand all of the above - but try explaining it to an eight year old who wants to know why we don't have the latest 'Magic Tree House' book, a ten-year old who wants to know when we're going to get the latest installment of 'Star Wars', or a teenager desperate to plunge into the latest volume in the 'Vampire Kisses' saga.

My Project

We're asking you to please help complete 10 book series in our library. These are wildly popular. You can guarantee that the kids will devour whatever books you donate. The younger kids will scramble to read the latest titles in the 'Magic Tree House' series, as well as 'Star Wars', 'Totally Spies', 'Disgusting Science', 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' and 'Percy Jackson'; older students will grab 'Bleach', 'Naruto', 'How I Survived Middle School' and 'Vampire Kisses' books. Book series really drive student independent reading - they are the most important homework of all. And the one that's most fun, too!

Our children are already fired up to read.
