This year, my 60 students are hungry for more independent reading books. These students read at a variety of levels, so this year, honoring student requests is even more important. I am so proud of the work my students do, and I would like to support them by providing them with more reading materials.
Building enthusiasm for reading is essential for student success.
While many of my students love to read and write, we an equal amount of budding readers and writers. My students are from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and need to see themselves in the books they read. Many of my students read below grade level and need high-interest books written at a level they can access.
My Project
Giving children high-interest books helps strengthen their enthusiasm for reading! Books in this DonorsChoose.org project were requested by members of our 6th-grade class and students in our writing club (6th-8th).
In my experience, matching children to books can take time, effort, and hours of contemplation.
These books were hand-picked by our students, so half the battle is already won! Our goal is to continue developing a life-long reading habit. What better way than expanding our classroom library?
I would like to get these books into the hands of my students as soon as possible, so they can enjoy as many texts as possible this year. Every day, we sit down and work on our independent reading skills. Many students read books as part of our 40-book challenge, a challenge that encourages students to finish as many books as they can in the course of year (aiming for 40). Having these books will help them reach their reading goals, whether or not they are aiming for 40.
