Help me give my students the supplies they need to explore the physical world around them. For example, a triple beam balance allows fifth graders opportunities to practice math and science skills while measuring weight of matter.
We like to think of our TK-5th grade school as producing well-rounded, whole children who make healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and spirits. We teach them to care about achieving academically, pushing their bodies to gain physical strength, flexibility, and stamina, and finding joy in the performing and fine arts.
My 5th grade students strive to thrive with challenges that enable them to collaborate, communicate, be creative and critical thinkers who can make a difference.
Our community is very stable with many families who have a long history in the area. Other families return after college with their own families to attend this well regarded elementary school. In fact, some of our teachers on staff were once students!
Because we are a high academic achieving school, we often do not qualify for the same grant and state funding that schools of lower socioeconomic status would. This does not mean, though, that we are any less worthy, nor do we necessarily have the funds to provide the students with the complete opportunities we would like.
My Project
Students explore how matter is conserved when going through physical and chemical changes. Measuring weight before and after butter melts, for example, shows students that the physical state of matter might change, but the weight of that matter does not.
These inquiry-based activities are the foundational stepping stones for middle school and high school chemistry.
When fifth grade students learn to identify matter using physical properties, or when fifth graders learn how to create a chemical change versus a physical change in matter, they are not only better prepared for success as critical thinkers; they become well-rounded problem solvers as well.
