I am a thirty-two-year-old teacher with nine years experience teaching first and second grades. Recently, my principal proposed a new position to me, a health, nutrition, and physical fitness teacher. I would be part of a team and would work solely with the first grade. After thinking about this idea, I realized how severe the health crisis is in the South Bronx and how I could make a difference.
I am asking for basic equipment and materials that would support the vision I have for this new program. I would like to have a kid-friendly library on health and nutrition, as well as books that teach children about their body and the many functions it must perform. I would also like to promote a healthy lifestyle by introducing several fun movement activities along with CD's to motivate students. I also am asking for some games that would help develop the students' motor skills.
I am very excited to start helping these little students learn how to take better care of themselves, and maybe they can spread their knowledge to their siblings and family members. I do not see healthy habits being taught at home and feel it then must be a school responsibility to insure students get the knowledge they need to stay healthy in these times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
