By the end of the school year I would like to see every child in my classroom at reading level and loving to read. With help from my fellow teachers and aids we are on our way. One area that I need help in, is independent reading.
There are 26 students in my classroom.
Each of them is very special to me. They all like to have a story read to them and they like to practice the reading skills they have learned. They have learned to sound out words they don't know, use highlight words they aren't familiar with and identify sight words and letters. They are eager to learn and get so excited when they are successful.
Our school is in a very rural, low income area. A large number of our students receive free and reduced lunches and have both parents working to provide for them. A large number of my students are at risk students and need special interventions to get them to grade level.
My Project
If we receive this listening center, students will be able to work independently in small groups reinforcing their reading skills. They will be able to have the story read to them as they follow along in the book, highlighting unfamiliar words and increasing their vocabulary.
Several books have been purchased to be used with a CD player, we just don't have the technology for the students and I to use to access these books.
Students will be able to listen to the stories, retell the stories and be able to write their own stories from listening to these stories. They will learn about authors and why the authors write certain stories and what type of story an author usually writes. They have been doing this at a certain level, but with the listening center they will be able to expand their learning and literacy environment.
This project will help my students become better readers.
Better readers are better achievers. They will gain self confidence and will be willing to take chances when confronted with words they don't know . They will become excited about learning and will want to share what they have learned with fellow students and their own families. The smiles will be bigger and the excitement hard to contain in our classroom.
