Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from very recent immigrants with limited English skills to students that were born and raised in our community. Most of their families speak Spanish at home and very few have parents that attended college.
In fact, many will be the first in their families to finish high school.
My students are quiet and loud, interested in sports and electronics, and enjoy drawing, singing, and dancing. Nearly all of them live below the poverty line, but they don't let that define them. Many have a vision of their future and are working very hard to achieve their goals.
My Project
Our school no longer has funding to purchase feminine products for students. When students come to school unprepared, they may end up calling their parents to be dismissed and miss valuable class time.
My students need vending machines to access feminine products along tampons and pads while in school.
With access to inexpensive tampons and maxipads, students will be able to stay in school. Since the machines will be located in school bathrooms, students will have the privacy they deserve.
Since the machines require quarters the dispensers will provide the necessary funds to purchase more products as needed, making this a sustainable solution. Any extra quarters generated through this project would be distributed to the school offices to provide to students without spare change.
