I have the privilege of spending my days with eager, curious, and enthusiastic 7 and 8-year-olds who want to do their very best at everything they try. They are growing up in a world that allows them to be individuals and respects their individual differences and learning styles.
Each year, I try something new to allow for greater flexibility and to encourage collaboration and deeper learning.
I am very excited about the dream I have for the students I am working with this year!
My Project
I am fortunate enough to teach 7- and 8-year-olds who are passionate about learning and growing by always doing their best. However, these students are functioning at levels ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade.
Due to the varying skills of my students, I try to balance whole-group instruction with opportunities for my students to work at their individual levels on a daily basis.
This blended learning model allows for each student to be exposed to age-appropriate material and to also be challenged at his or her individual level in reading and math. Programs like Xtra Math and Prodigy are helping my students to get drill and practice of basic math facts, as well as to boost other math skills daily. I love using Prodigy because I can embed practice to complement what we are doing in math class, while my students see it as completing math challenges to advance in the wizarding world of Prodigy. I can also embed assignments and assessments for individual skill development based on each child's needs. We were fortunate to originally receive Fire tablets from generous donors in a former project, but some of those tablets have lived out their lives and no longer charge. By adding five Fire tablets (to replace those no longer charging) to the functioning devices we already have in our classroom, I would have enough to give every student the guarantee of individual learning opportunities each day! I have also included headphones and adapters so students can use these learning programs independently and not disrupt other students while they are working independently.
I know these programs are working in my classroom, as proven by student growth data, but we need to replace the tablets that will not charge so we can keep the momentum and learning going!
