As a language arts teacher at a low-income/high poverty Title I urban school, I know that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom that distract from their learning. Many of our students are English language learners who need extra support and assistance.
Providing students with high-interest novels to read while not in school, is important to continue to develop their love for reading during a stressful time of uncertainty.
They need the opportunity to be part of their learning through book activities that personalize their education. Students need books that reflect their interests and reading levels.
Many of my students receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Our school's diverse atmosphere for learning is paramount in the changing world of education and preparing students for either college or the workforce. From the time they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth in writing and reading while they are with me. We work hard in preparing the students to become college- and/or career-ready.
My Project
I am truly blessed this year with a remarkable young group of students who love to read. Throughout the school year, their love and passion for reading have grown with leaps and bounds.
As the school year is closing with uncertainty, I would love for each student to have a book that they can read to help continue to develop their reading skills and foster their desire to read even more.
Each title was selected based on the many interests of the students I have in class. I thought specifically about what books the students checked out at our school's library and what books they requested the librarian to purchase. This group of students is special among many for their desire to want to read every day in class and share what they have read. They have truly become a community of readers and learners. I want to see them continue reading now and throughout the summer.
