My urban Title 1 school has a very dedicated soccer team. During the school day, I teach computer awareness, after school, I am fortunate to coach students that truly have a love for the game.
Many of my players are recent immigrants and soccer is one of the things they are most familiar with when getting accustomed to their new environment.
Imagine moving to a new country and the adjustments you would need to make. Now imagine how much comfort you would get from something that was familiar in the midst of so much uncertainty.
My students truly love the game but are often unable to provide their own materials to participate effectively. We compete with teams all over the city with vastly different access to the proper resources.
I want my students to have the resources they need to match the talent and drive they have.
The cleats will help students to perform with the quickness and agility they need in order to compete with other groups. The socks and shin guards will ensure that we are adequately protected. The goalie gloves will give our goalies the grip needed to stop potential goals. The soccer balls will make our drills more effective as we prepare for our upcoming games.
Your donation to our project will not only help my students to improve as athletes but will also provide my students with the much-needed comfort that comes with something familiar. Soccer is universal and playing on our team allows students from several different backgrounds to work together. The confidence my students gain on the field can then transfer to the classroom, and elsewhere throughout their lives.
