The electrodes will allow us to continue to separate hydrogen and oxygen gases using power supplies that we have. The nickel electrodes that we currently have lasted a couple of years, but have now started to corrode down through to the steel underneath the nickel plating meaning that students are seeing the steel turn to rust when oxidized in this reaction. They electrodes need to be replaced and the platinum electrodes will last longer. The clamps will allow us to perform experiments in class that use ring stands that we have, and the film canisters wear out quickly when used for Alka-Seltzer rockets to learn about the factors that affect reaction rates.
