I am the librarian at a small public school that is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. We are a Title I school with a poverty rate of 97%. Almost 15% of our students are homeless. Numerous families receive weekend food assistance in their child's backpack from our local food bank.
Many of my students are reluctant readers, and academic success does not come easily or quickly.
In our school, we strive to create a warm, safe and welcoming classrooms while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
My Project
For many of my students, reading is a frustrating challenge. Chapter books can be intimidating, but often they will try a graphic novel which has easy to read text and interesting pictures. I've asked for graphic novel series that my students have specifically asked me to try to get. In the past with my older, but still low reading level students, I have had amazing success with a graphic novel series about important American holidays. Additionally, my school has a significant English Learners population, and I believe graphic novels will help with their reading efforts. It is thrilling to see students who are just learning to read, be excited and wanting to read any book they can get their hands on! I have asked for hardcover and library binding for the books so students for many years to come can enjoy and use these books.
Graphic novels, which are written in comic book style, engage students like no other book format I have seen in my experience as a librarian.
With your help, my students will be ready and eager to reach their reading goals!
