My students need a portable air conditioner so the heat doesn’t stop them from excelling in our classroom!

I teach French in an urban neighborhood school in a diverse community on the South Side of Chicago. Our students mostly come from working to middle class African American families. Our school has a strong sense of community and the staff consistently goes over and above for our students because our kids’ motivation is contagious. Over 80% of our students go to college and we have over 90% attendance rate. It’s without question that they take school and learning seriously.
All kids deserve to learn in a comfortable environment. Providing a safe and comfortable classroom for students is one of the foundations for creating an environment where students will learn and prosper. Last year our classroom was sweltering hot. We recorded temperatures as high as 87! It was hard to stay motivated for all of us as we tried our best to stay cool and learn at the same time. My students are dedicated and motivated to learn French but even with their enthusiasm, the heat really dragged them down and prevented them from participating how they really wanted to due to the heat. I include a lot of movement and interaction in my lesson plans, but the heat zapped the students' typical excitement for these activities. As their teacher, I wanted to be the best I could be for them but often after teaching all day long I would feel ill and dizzy after being in the heat with them all day. This felt extremely disappointing! I don’t want to let them down!
This year we’re trying to be proactive and create an environment in our classroom that’s conducive for learning.
Adults and children alike deserve to work in a comfortable environment and it was hard to stay motivated for all of us as we tried our best to stay cool and learn at the same time. Our HVAC in our building is from the 1960s and is inefficient. This portable air conditioner will keep us learning French with a pep in our step!
