Mr. B, I am not looking forward to going to your classroom when it is hot out." My students know that the classroom they are in will be scorching. It is a small room with broken windows and shades. No repairs have been made. We need a portable air conditioner for the warm months! Thanks
My students in my school are like a family.
From beginning kindergarten to graduation, they stay together..like a family. My students are bright and charming students ranging from advanced placement curriculum students to students with learning disabilities. Since music is a team activity, they must work together as one regardless of backgrounds or grade level in order to succeed. They are a diverse group of city kids in a low-income, Title I school. They come from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. They are all funny, sweet, generous, and engaging.
My Project
Imagine you are studying in a room congested with minimal ventilation. You are trying to stay focused and concentrated. You have learned that complaining and whining is not the way to improve the situation. This is what most of our students are experiencing in our classroom. They have built the character to not complain about the situation and try their best. We have 2 windows that open 6 inches, so fans did not help. We received one portable A/C before school ended for summer and it made a huge difference. We all know that when the summer comes, the windows will not be repaired. The school simply drilled down windows with lock latches so opening them (if at all) is not possible. My students will be in a hot, sweaty room where it is hard to stay focused this Fall. A portable air conditioner that we can extend the vent to the small window opening will turn our classroom into a cool and comfortable place to learn. We thank you in advance!
Our classroom is located on the fourth floor, and our staff created a nickname for the fourth floor in which they call it "Florida." It is hot all year long even in the winter when the heat rises.
The room is generally above 75F. It easily reaches high 90F temperature in summer. Students sweat in class and instruments and accessories get damaged by the intense heat. This will help keep students cool and prevent instruments and reeds from cracking and warping.
