I am a Middle School Band Director and one of the biggest problems that I run into is broken instruments. Eleven and twelve year old students are sometimes careless with their band instruments requiring replacement parts and simple repair. When an instrument needs repair the student must take it in to a repair shop even if I may be able to fix it or replace a part because I do not have the materials needed to do the job. On average, it will take two or more weeks for a repair shop to get the job done. Meanwhile, the student is sitting in class every day doing nothing and learning nothing, waiting on the instrument to be returned. My proposal is to get a Deluxe Teacher Repair Kit. With the parts and materials in this kit I will be able to do most minor repairs and replacements on my own the same day allowing the student to miss very minimal amounts of class time if any at all. I have well over 100 students who will benefit from this Repair Kit so it will be very worthwhile. I teach Band at a Language Immersion School. At this school students have the opportunity to take their classes in French, Japanese, German, and Spanish. The student population is a melting pot of cultures from around the world with students from Egypt, Japan, Germany, France, ect. What I have found to be interesting is that music is a universal language in which this diverse student population really enjoys taking pride in. No matter what language we speak or where we may be from, we can come together in the language of music to communicate, have fun, and learn discipline, responsibility, and teamwork.
