My classroom consists of 13 amazing students in grades 4-6 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a result of their ASD diagnosis, these students experience many academic, social and communication challenges. Our school has been closed since March 13th and learning has been remote ever since and will remain this way until the end of the school year. They have been working on initial work packets that were sent home as well as participating in online learning as best they can. When we are in the classroom, learning is so hands on, so the online learning is a huge change and causes resistance. Hands on materials that they are familiar with from their classrooms will help them be able to better engage and continue to work on the skills that they have worked so hard to achieve.
My Project
The coronavirus has turned my students’ usual routine and learning upside down. My students learn best by engaging with hands on materials. These materials will help make remote learning much more for the students and their families. My students will be able to practice their writing, comprehension, math, money and sorting skills in a more hands on way that better replicates how we do it in the classroom. I will also be able to print more customized activities to send them that will help them work keep towards their goals!
