My students are a sweet group of second graders who love to learn. They are very diverse. Many are learning English as a second language and many live in poverty. All come to school each day with a smile and a kind heart, ready to try their best. This year, I have 27 students and will likely get more as the year progresses. I want to make sure they have everything they need to make their time with me effective and enjoyable.
Despite their challenges, I very rarely hear any of my students complain.
In fact, they are the first to share and help a friend in need. In the spirit of their giving selflessness, I want to give what I can back to them.
My Project
Do you remember second grade? You would've been seven, turning eight. Chances are you remember some of it, maybe some field trips, maybe your teacher or friends, but not all of it. You were very young! And my second graders are very young. Something that's hard for young learners is to stay organized!
Research has proven the benefits of reading at home.
But that's hard to do when you've lost your books, your folder, or both! Every year I have some students that miss out on that crucial independent reading time simply because they can't stay organized. I saw these folders and thought they would be a great way to address that! They have a side for homework, and a side for papers that need to go home, and each side has a velcro top that comes down and closes so nothing can fall out. They are also clear so parents can quickly see if there's homework or other notes. They also look very durable - something essential when you consider they are being brought to and from school everyday.
I think these school to home organizers would improve my students' ability to complete their homework and reading daily.
