My elementary students are strong, optimistic, and resilient. This K-12 school currently has 134 students in grades K-8. Of these students, 65 of them, 48.51% qualify for free or reduced lunch prices. The city evolved from a farming community to a bedroom community of a military base with a population of approximately 1,000 people. Due to its proximity to the military base (16 miles away), 26% of students are from military families with many students having a parent deployed or facing deployment. Children from military families reported higher levels of emotional difficulties than children in the general population. The city's distance to the base also means military families are not housed on base and do not have as easy access to support structures.
My Project
I would love to increase the reading options my students have. I have a limited budget and I simply can not afford to provide the resources my students deserve. This project would provide my students with additional books and recently published books to grow their love of reading. It will also allow me to offer my students books to use for our book club that I have recently started within my classroom. They are loving the book club and our discussions and reading through my current collection of books much quicker than I anticipated.
