Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students have different personalities, different socio-economic statuses, different college and career expectations, and goals. These combine to make educating children a challenge daily. I must think out of the box to create lessons that can reach all children to have a class that works for everyone.

My students' backgrounds vary.

Some have two working parents, some may live in homes with a single parent who is the sole provider for the household, and some work after school to afford what their parents cannot. School-wide data shows approximately 91% are economically disadvantaged. Currently, my students are being taught online by me using Google Classroom due to Covid-19. They are missing a great deal of information by being away from school and the daily routine of discussion of important topics such as hand washing.

My Project

The materials I chose are simply the textbooks my children need in order to learn the content of ServSafe Manager.

It is often difficult to try and explain content simply by sharing notes when my students have no background knowledge.

Being able to have students follow along by reading through text gives them a deeper understanding of the content taught rather than repeating information I give them in a slideshow. The text gives scenarios and case studies with questioning for students to check their knowledge of the topics being taught in each chapter. Students can feel confident after each chapter knowing they have understood what they learned. The textbooks will be reused in future classes; the scantrons are a one-time use supply.
