I teach K-6 general music and 5th grade band at a school south of Seattle where 89% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. A majority of our students are bilingual and thrive off of bringing different cultures into our music classroom. I will strive to provide music education that everyone can access, understand, and enjoy.
I came into my classroom this summer as a first year teacher, realizing that we are lacking in many materials in order to create an equal and opportune access to music education.
My goal is to create a fun-filled, functioning and equitable classroom for my students.
I am passionate and determined about providing these kids what they deserve in order to achieve success in the music classroom.
My Project
89% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. They are not able to rent instruments, let alone purchase supplies in order to be successful. Swabs are absolutely important in beginning students off correctly by showing them how to clean their instruments and discussing why it is important to keep them clean.
Support this project so my clarinet students can have the means to swab and clean the inside of their instruments after playing.
My students will learn how to utilize the swabs correctly as well as learn why it is important to clean the inside of their instruments to prevent spreading sickness as well as keeping the instrument in good working condition.
These habits of musicianship are important for our beginning band students and I want to be sure they have an equitable chance at creating these habits.
