This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are spunky, excited, anxious, and eager all at the same time. As a teacher in a low-income school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students come from homes that are full of trials and tribulations; some of our students do not know where their next meal is coming from.
Despite the many challenges they face, they keep smiles on their faces and come to school to learn!
I am a resource room teacher that works with 16 wonderful fourth and fifth graders with a variety of disabilities. My students are my world, and I love to bring the world to them. My students are engaged and eager to learn about everything; they encourage and motivate me each and every day!
My Project
I work with a very diverse student population with equally as diverse needs. Many of my students will benefit from a social skills group where we can focus on self-regulation, mindfulness and coping strategies. Our school focuses on using trauma informed practices in the classroom. We need curriculum that focuses on teaching coping skills and self-regulation to all of our students.
In a partnership with our school psychologist, I would like to implement lunch groups next year to focus on these important skills.
The games and curriculum resources will be used with students to teach them skills necessary for them to be successful in the classroom and out of the classroom. Students will play the games to enhance cooperation and team work, while learning new coping strategies. It is my hope to help my students find their inner calm!
