Help me give my students flexible seating to meet their sensory preferences. The wobble chair will help students who need constant sensory input during independent and small group work.
My students are vivacious and full of potential. I teach 11 students with special needs. Most of them are from low-income Chinese immigrant families. They range from ages four to seven and are all emergent bilinguals. They each have different sensory needs and preferences.
We focus on creative problem solving and gratitude in our class.
We start each day with a social story, preemptively solving any social problems that may arise. We end each day with Thank You circle in which the students thank each other for their friendship and hard work.
The students are all very creative and unique. They are eager to learn from each other and to interact with each other through small group work and play.
My Project
All my students have disabilities and have different sensory preferences. Flexible seating helps meet these preferences so that the students can focus on learning. Currently, I have three flexible seat cushions in the classroom along with 11 sensory balls. The students rotate throughout the week to use these sensory materials. When they are using sensory materials, I see that students are more engaged in the lesson and are more excited to learn.
Having enough flexible seating for students will make learning more fun and help them stay engaged.
The flexible seating products I have selected will help meet different students' needs. The flex-space floor seat will help students who have trouble staying seated upright. The inflatable seat cushions are adjustable and will let students have the sensory input they need, especially students who are active! They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The wobble seat will help students who need constant sensory feedback. The beanbag chair will have double-duty, both as a peace corner and a comfy place where students can read and write. They are all small in size and can be stored easily.
I have witnessed how flexible seating can impact students' learning and hope that more choices will help students grow even more as learners!
